Is it a laptop and have you accidentally activated airplane mode? For
example by long pressing on one of your function keys for too long?

No, it's a desktop (Dell XPS 8500) - I love your line of thinking though!  
There isn't even a network in the settings to switch on/off.
I have just gone through all the FN keys on my keyboard to see if I had somehow made it behave like a laptop!
But no...
