I've just got a Pi4. I am thinking of getting a cheap monitor £60 for a

of a simple slot at the back of the plywood. Needs a two socket mains
extension but it shouldn't be too hard to make it nicely portable with
the monitor folded down over some foam (which can be used on the lap
perhaps?).

You have a fully functional portable computer running open office and
most other things under Debian (and possibly Devuan soon) for less than
the price of even a bottom of the range PC to show of open source - and
you can even write 'I love <insert favourite band>' on the 'case' in
felt tip!

You've done that thing I used to do all the time by accidentally
hijacking a thread!

If you're doing this as an awesome fun project then yeah, it sounds
awesome and fun. It also sounds diabolically terrible in every way
except as a fun project. The £200 PineBook Pro arriving shortly would
cost a little bit more but actually be useful, and better in every way.

I'd highly dispute what you're proposing would in any way constitute a
"fully functional portable computer"! A collection of random bits nailed
to plank is what you'd have. There is a professionally refurbed E7440
with an i5, 8Gb RAM, 1080P IPS panel and a SSD running Linux and
OpenBSD sat next to me that cost £150 on Ebay with a 1 year warranty -
does that count as a bottom of the range PC to show off open source?

Don't get me wrong it sounds like exactly the sort of nonsense that I
love but I think you're maybe overselling it and underestimating the
competition...

Cheers
