Re: [LUG] Router

Hi

Probably me.Â

Bought a 5 port router for the internal network. But no modem so was using original modem. The network connection from the original modem to the new router was running at 100mb slowing everything back to a crawl when connecting to the internet.Â

So I bought a new modem router which runs a better WiFi as noted and also a four port hub with 1000mb connections.Â

Hope that explains things better. Enjoy the rest of the mince pies! I started a diet a few days before Christmas and have largely stuck to it including very few mince pies!Â

What exactly did you buy? It sounds like you've upgraded your router to
a newer model with a built-in gigabit switch which has increased the
speed of your local wired network, as expected. If it's a typical
all-in-one modem/router/switch it probably also supports newer and
"better" wifi standards as well so any of your wireless clients that
have support should also benefit from faster intranet connection speeds
too.

It's not clear why you'd reasonably expect your *internet* connection
speed to have changed though - uploading from your local network to
Dropbox is still going to be entirely limited by whatever broadband
package you have with your ISP, no matter what model router you're
sending that traffic through. If you want your internet connection to be
faster (and who doesn't...) then you need to call them with your payment
details to hand.

Your last sentence has really confused me... Haven't you just upgraded
your router? That's literally what you said in the second sentence "I
went and bought a router"! Perhaps you've bought a stand-alone router
after all and not an all-in-one replacement and now you're wondering
about also changing your modem?

Your entire post is almost poetically ambiguous, or maybe I'm just dazed
from all of the mince pies :)

Cheers
