Bristol to home took me 3 hours yesterday by public transport, twice the

long aside from the obvious it was a bus not a train for most of it.

When I first moved to Devon (from Bristol), I used to travel to Bristol once a week for some contracts I still had there (I'd stay in Bristol for 1-2 nights). It was 100 miles door to door and within walking distance of Parkway station however I chose to drive because the train was the same price as petrol at the time and I'd have to drive to Totnes/Newton Abbot and pay for parking on-top of that anyway. Then get a taxi or bus to get from where I was working to my digs. Car was easier.

I was in Manchester last week - train would have cost me £135 return. Car cost me about £70 in petrol and £20 in parking. Journey took the same time as the train would have taken.

Regional trains seem to work, (e.g. Exeter <> Plymouth) but longer distances are just not that economical, especially with more than 1 person traveling, however I am off to Cambridge in May and, assuming the line is fixed, I'll be taking the train (via London) That journey only costs about £90. (Cheapest fare, non-peak, etc.)
