Re: [LUG] MAC address on Android

So, after talking to the Alien Mothership, I've come to a decision (I think.) To summarise:

My Android Phone returns a different MAC address every time it logs on to a wifi. This is due to a script (thank you Google) which gives 3 hex digits corresponding to a manufacturer plus 3 random hex digits (thank you Steve). This is part of the operating system. This breaks with tradition in that MAC addresses were expected to be fixed, not changeable. The random MAC gives networking problems. As far as I can see it does not give any security problems, in fact, maybe the reverse?

Two very knowledgeable people on this list say it is a fault and that I should return the phone. But as it is part of the op system I imagine that the makers would say it is a feature. I could root the phone and install a script to return a fixed MAC if I wanted (see Google).

Also, I have every intention of replacing Google Android with a more user friendly operating system when one comes to sufficient maturity for my needs, probably in the next 6 to 9 months?

Therefore, I have come to that time honoured decision, to do nothing!!

Thank you all for your kind assistance, as ever,

George

I have had several Android devices around the house and not a single one has changed MAC addresses - this include my Nexus 5* and a couple of friends Nexus 4's. I'm guessing the problem is with devices where the manufacturer has not configured them properly rather than Google. Can you not fix the code?

*rats it seems Ubuntu phone is not being done for this!
