Much as I like initiatives like these, I find the whole idea of secure 
social media (this thread started about the NSA) a bit of a contradiction.
Once you share information with other people, whatever happens to that 
information is beyond your control. So unless you've gone through an 
extreme vetting process with your contacts (which takes the 'social' out 
of social media), you shouldn't share it there.
Sure, one would expect social media not to make your information 
accessible through third parties (neither by design, nor by accident), but 
frankly, the big sites tend do a pretty good job when it comes to that.
(I'm not saying there aren't good arguments for using Diaspora rather than 
Facebook. There are. But if you're worried about the NSA, the police or 
even your employer reading your information, you shouldn't put it on 
there in the first place.)
