And Diaspora: http://joindiaspora.com

Much as I like initiatives like these, I find the whole idea of secure social media (this thread started about the NSA) a bit of a contradiction.

Once you share information with other people, whatever happens to that information is beyond your control. So unless you've gone through an extreme vetting process with your contacts (which takes the 'social' out of social media), you shouldn't share it there.

Sure, one would expect social media not to make your information accessible through third parties (neither by design, nor by accident), but frankly, the big sites tend do a pretty good job when it comes to that.

(I'm not saying there aren't good arguments for using Diaspora rather than Facebook. There are. But if you're worried about the NSA, the police or even your employer reading your information, you shouldn't put it on there in the first place.)

Martijn.

I think your are taking it too far. I abuse facebook - I have friends I keep in contact with on it - all my contacts are already know to me one way or another. Most of these friends wouldn't be able to run their own social network but I have a couple who can and once we're setup 'secure'  socialising can commence. But one of the problems with them is that their security means no-one knows you are there. But that's how security works - on a need to know basis.
I wish I didnt live in a hollow so I could setup mesh networking as well!
