Look for a package under Debian called smstools - however the old one was merged into a big horrible blob some years back rather than the putsms and getsms indivdual programs (which I still use) They're command line which makes them trivial to call from anything.

Trivial:

putsms +447712191046 "Hello there"
Thanks Gordon, that's put me on the right track.

I like *trivial* :)

Thanks everyone

Just completed my first tests.

We bought one of these in the end [http://www.rfsolutions.co.uk/acatalog/info_GSM100EVO_LITE.html] as it plugged into a proper COM port.

Gordon's suggestion of using the smstools packaged worked well. Install was straight forward, I just had to set the correct baud rate in the config and away we went!

Messages are sent by placing specially crafted text files into a spool directory monitored by smstools' smsd daemon. Easy to code in PHP. Awesome.
