Re: [LUG] Samba - not the dance

As I said we have a desktop and two laptops here all using the same
router. The desktop is linked via cable and the laptops use wifi. It
just seems strange to me that there is no simple way for me on the
desktop for example to be able to view files on one of the other
machines. Oh well, perhaps teamviewer is the way to go??

If a router upgrade is pending, maybe that is a solution? Some routers (I'm thinking Draytek because I use them almost exclusively now - I have eight in service today), allow you to plug in a usb stick which can then be shared as a Samba drive.

Also various low-power devices, such as Sheevaplug, Raspberry Pi that take no space, hardly any power and make no noise - all should have grunt enough to act as a fileserver - which is basically what you're after. With USB sticks and SDCards available up to 64gb now, also no need to plug an hdd caddy in for small use.

I keep a 'proper' server running in my roof at home (debian, zoneminder, mythtv, development/test box and various) but appreciate not everyone thinks that's a good solution. :)
