Re: [LUG] VBox and webcam

I have VBox set up. Host Linux Mint 10 KDE. Guest Mint 12 KDE for

device, (memory stick) or my printer in VBox. These are found and
recognised without any problem.

But, when I want to use my webcam in VBox it sees it via the USB port
but reports it as 'Unknown device'. So I cannot use the webcam in VBox.

Is there any way round this please? I have searched in Google but no joy
so far. Or perhaps it can't be done.

Thanks

I think the last time I saw this with a USB device was because a module had loaded the driver for the device and wouldn't let Virtual Box take over the device. IIRC I had to disable the driver using rmmod.

Just tried removing the webcam driver on my laptop, I unloaded the driver by typing:

sudo rmmod uvcvideo

Not sure if that's any help. It's possible your USB webcam might use a different driver to my laptop webcam. Using lsusb and lsmod you should hopefully be able to fathom which one it is, I worked out mine by checking the output of lsmod:

uvcvideo 67271 0
videodev 85626 1 uvcvideo

Hope this helps.
