Quite a lot of the old backup programs handle splitting media.

Split media has a lot of extra issues. You need to make sure you can
find the stuff to recover, that errors in one section are contained, etc.

As you say Â5 for one backup and a lot of messing around.

Or Â50 for 10 as the going rate for branded 1TB drives is now circa Â50,
less if you shop around. 2TB are starting at Â60.

The hard disk will probably have a 480Mbps writing speed if you have
USB3, allowing 100GB to be backed up half an hour to an hour and can be
scheduled to run unattended.

How fast is your DVD writer? If you have a 16x DVD writer that can
actually sustain 16x writing for data, then you are talking about a
third of that speed, and you'll need 12 DVDs. So assuming you can change
them instantly it is 1.5 hours minimum, it isn't going to be done very
often, data will be lost, people will feel sad.

That said 24x DVD writers are cheap (Â12) but are often slower on RW
media. So might be viable, especially if you just want to backup new stuff.

I pondered the options and went for external USB hard disk last time,
although I think the difficulty in making and verifying a backup to such
media if you REALLY care about the data is under-rated. And ideally of
course you'd have 2 for when it all goes bang when the first one is
connected.

I can leave a pack of dvd's and ANYONE can backup their personal junk and take responsibility for it. They can go and get an external harddrive if they like but as simple cheap option the dvs's which they can write while playing games or whatever and leave at a friends or something. Its partly about making apparent the value of data - and that includes its cost - and if they're taking responsibility for non company/system critical data then they have to put a value on it themselves and if they donât think its worth backing up then clear it off the system thanks.... The trouble with fibre is people will download and hoard gigabytes of shit that they will never use because its cheap (in their terms) to do so. Make them realise the real cost...
