You can do this in emacs too. Ctrl Q followed by the octal number
for the character you want , eg 340 for the à. Oh and 361 for the
Spanish ñ (cf original query).

Or: C-x 8 RET <unicode char number or (with completion) name, eg POUND SIGN>
