Hello Gordon,

I don't think it's proper to expect ordinary users to have to enter
the root password every time their printer goes to sleep...

Printers that sleep. Whatever next? :-)

Seriously, other than admin, users shouldn't even *know* the root
password.

I'm reasonably sure that if you add the wife's user account to lpadmin
group, her own password ought to work to be suitable to wake up the
printer. This is based on the fact that my UID is in the lpadmin group
and I can use that ID& password for administering CUPS. It's worth a
try, and a lot safer than giving her the root p/word.

Perhaps I should explain, as the originator of this thread. I have a desktop computer. The Epson printer is linked to it by cable. Most of the time the printer is turned off. I turn it on only when I wish to print something. When I am not working on the computer, that too is turned off.

In another room my wife uses a laptop computer, which links to the internet via wifi. (The router is next to the desktop computer.) When she wants to print something she sends the instruction via file --> print. This puts the item in the print queue on the desktop. The next time I turn on the printer that job prints.

Normally that just works. But this time, just for one job, that same job keeps appearing in the queue as a new job and prints again. So now, before turning on the printer, I check the queue.

I was asking if anyone could suggest what was going on.

Thanks again

Neil
