I've a sneaky feeling you are right on that, there was something to mark
sections of assembler.

Assembly code was placed between square brackets.  Usually you'd stick
it inside a FOR loop to run two passes to allow the addresses of forward
labels to be calculated on the first pass and creating the machine code
on the second.
