Re: [LUG] Firefox and other browsers

Sometime I see advice to try browsers other than Firefox. The most common suggestions are Opera and Chrome.

Well, I have been using Opera occasionally for years and I have tried Chrome recently. There is one problem though. I have my own website and I often need, through my browser, to link my hard drive to the website to be able to move files one way or the other.

In firefox I use fireftp which works a treat. I have not found anything like that in either Opera or Chrome. While that is the case I will continue with FF and ignore the other two.

Or am I missing something? How can people recommend those two browsers when such a simple requirement is missing?

Neil

"Simple requirement" - FireFTP is a pretty unique addon. All browsers have FTP support (ftp://username:password@xxxxxxxxxxxx) but FireFTP is a third party addon (extension). You shouldn't expect other browsers to have a similar feature as the vast majority of users simply don't need or want it and remember one of the things that makes Firefox the best browser around is the "easy to use/develop" extension framework and the amount of extensions available. Also the majority of FTP clients are a lot more comprehensive then FireFTP. I've used it in the past and its good, don't get me wrong, but like other I struggle to see why a browser FTP client is a necessity...

Also why use or recommend Opera (except for testing) and Chrome (when you can use Chromium)?

Cheers,

Gibbs
