Can't say it's a project that enthuses me though :)

I do have half a dozen 'thin client' PCs that have been returned with
faulty PSUs though.... They have 1GB of RAM and have 1GHz VIA processors
in them... Not sure about the graphics hardware might boot one up to
find out... I ran them off flash IDE drives....

Sounds useful ? I think new psu's are < 10 quid in ebuyer

They're £12 + VAT.

They are rather specialist with a funky 4-pin connector to the external 12V brick.

See:

the PSU is the board to the left and the external connector is attached to the PSU board.

They did run a shade warm - I observed the case at 50C when deprived of ventilation - the case touches the heatsink... So I suspect running them 24/7 for over a year wasn't what they were designed for. I also know some of them were placed under desks and used as book-ends, so they wouldn't help...

The motherboard (miniITX) does have a standard 20-pin power socket, so one option I have is taking the motherboard out and putting it in a new case, but that's even more expensive - given that I now have 7 of them which have failled after 12-15 months of usage, I'm not convinced new PSUs will help. LinITX assure me that out of ~600 they've sold, they've only had one other returned with a faulty PSU - yet they stock the specialist PSUs for them... I've got a few more out in the field, waiting to fail ... Although fitting a new PSU and selling them on for e.g. 50 quid is an option I'm considering, just to recoup some of the costs.

When I have some time, I'm going to check through them and see what's recoverable - I've checked 3 so-far with an external PSU and they motherboards have been fine.

Maybe I'll build up my own LTSP setup - I do boot my new PBXs over the 'net now when doing the initial install into their flash devices... How hard can it be... ;-)
