Does anyone have experience of connecting two points which are about 500m apart? One device will probably be a sheevaplug, another my laptop.String? USB? Ethernet? Wifi? There are a lot of options and ambiguity.
String would do it, doesn't do much for data though although I guess with two tin cans you could maybe just maybe get some voice down it.
USB, limited to 5 metres without a repeater.Ethernet, limited to 100 Metres at least on CAT5. Can't remember what the limits on 10Base2 coax is, something like 300 metres or something without a repeater.
Wifi, well that might work. I've heard stories of Pringles cans. Not sure if maybe a big antenna would do the job, maybe with an OpenWRT/DD-WRT/etc router on each end?
