Not exactly difficult, considering that has been the version in use for many years now (you won't find much that hasn't been recompiled to work) and all of Nokia's modern non-touchscreen smartphones run it. There is S60v5, which runs on touchscreen phones. v4 doesn't exist because the number 4 is apparently unlucky in some parts of the world. What doesn't help is that there is a "Symbian Foundation" that controls a platform called "S60" which has its own version numbers and runs on top of the Symbian OS with its own set of version numbers and both combine as part of a firmware load which in turn has its own set of random version numbers (My N95 jumps from v30 to v35 or something, all in one update). I can't say I have a problem installing applications on my phone (although, there is the minefield that is having to sometimes sign the applications for them to install).
