Symbian itself is fully open source now, but all the phones are still closed, the networks are still allowed to brand them, and the device manufacturers are still hopelessly slow at releasing updates and there are a thousand different versions for each device.Yep, I've found that, there seems to be quite a few versions of Symbian too, IIRC my phone is running Symbian S60 release 3 or something. I've pretty much avoided adding apps to the phone (although I do have Putty and the Opera browser).
