Digests for mailing lists suck (generally).

The problem is there is no way to easily reply without breaking
threading, and subject line.

So if you want people to participate digests are worse than useless.

The problem is mostly folks who don't filter their email into folders,
and don't thread those folders, so that they feel the need to attend to
every message in every topic in every mailing list.

Best solution is do server side filtering on List-Id, and create them a
folder for each mailing list automatically.

One of the causes is mail clients that don't offer easy and flexible
mail sorting. Thunderbird is bad enough - since the "create filter from
message" only works with "From" field. Kmail does something approaching
good here, with filter on this list offered as an option when creating a
rule from a message.
