Thanks to Rob and Grant for the suggestions,

I have just added LXDE to Xubuntu, merely by editing synaptic, and it
looks good, very "clean" and loads like lightening.  I'll see if I
can manage a successful Slackware (based)-LXDE installation later.  That
should really be something!

Apart from a quick burst at startup, the cooling fan has been silent
since.
