You're looking at under £100 for 4GB (2 x 2GB kit) of DDR2 memory and decent motherboards have at least 4 slots these days (decent - around at least about £50 not cheap £30 motherboards). Couple that with a quad core CPU and I bet simulations would run nice and quick. Then there's running code on the GPU as well, maybe that if it's possible would speed things up.
