It just means the prefix is not linked to a location, such as 029 for
Cardiff, 0208 for Greater London etc.

0845/0870 etc gives a flat rate from anywhere *within the UK*.

Steering this back to IT slightly ;) I had hell's delight trying to get
my old employer to stop giving out the new dialup number 0870 blahdeeblah.

1. It does *NOT* work reliably from abroad so giving it to customers to
dial up from was sheer idiocy. I had one customer give me a list of
countries he had visited in Europe and whether it would work or not.
Bizarrely I recall it worked in Northern Italy but not in the South?
Different carrier I expect. As for the USA forget it. Pot luck on what
state you visit.

2. Whatever brainiac came up with the idea forgot to remind them it
would cost more. Yes they *should* realise this but if they don't get
specifically *told* it's 'Hello Mr ISP pay the phone bill you didn't
warn me about.'

3. We *already* had a perfectly good (Guildford) number for them to use.

Being a stubborn Welshman I kept giving out the Guildford number, and
*when* customers called unable to connect from abroad to the new one I
gave them the old one *and* kept a record of how many I got. Sadly the
*idiot* management still persisted despite my having the personal
backing of our national networks manager.

Anyway back to the GPs. Call me picky, but, isn't my GP practise within
the same dialling code as me? 'Yes he is Julian.. three miles way by
road'... so why flickering hell do we NEED a flat-rate national number
to call them? It's obvious to me that the petitioner is correct, it's
just another money making scheme for the GP and phone company.

Kind regards,

Julian
