Hmm, does the driver produce a /dev/sand/dsp or /dev/dsp etc entry, if
so try sending that device node a file (a .wav file is probably best)
and see if you get anything directly that way.

You may also have alsa installed (and if alsa and no compatability
module then no /dev/snd/dsp etc) but give alsamixer a go from the
command line, sometimes it can solve sound mixer problems where kmix
just lets you down by not showing some extra mixer controls that may
be present.

Oh one more thing, do you have permission to use the sound device as
your normal user, is it a simple permissions problem where root is ok?

when I do a search on dsp I end up with the following

/sys/class/sound/dsp
/var/lib/alsa/dev/dsp
/dev/dsp
/dev/sound/dsp

all except /dev/dsp are owned by root. /dev/dsp is owned by me and is in the audio group. /dev/sound/dsp is a symbolic link to /dsp also owned by root. I don't know how to find out what it is linked to, I'm assuming /dev/dsp?

I started a root session and tried playing stuff, changing the kmix drop down and then using amarok. This made no difference either.

Using aslamixer the bits that seem to relate to the USB speakers are,

from the top of the display

/proc/asound/cards:
0 [Intel          ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel                                                  ▒       │
│      │                      HDA Intel at 0xccffc000 irq 16                                         #       │
│      │ 1 [default        ]: USB-Audio - C-Media USB Audio                                          #       │
│      │                      C-Media INC. C-Media USB Audio

and from the bottom of the page

/proc/asound/pcm:                                                                            #       │
│      │=================                                                                            #       │
│      │00-01: ALC880 Analog : ALC880 Analog : capture 2                                             #       │
│      │00-00: ALC880 Analog : ALC880 Analog : playback 1 : capture 2                                #       │
│      │01-00: USB Audio : USB Audio : playback 1

sorry about the mess.

This makes not a vast amount of sense to me, but on the basis of what I think it means I checked the volume on PCM is up, select the USB audio stuff from the kmix drop down and set the master channel to PCM.

pcm in /proc/asound looks like this

         -r--r--r--   1 root root 0 Sep 23 09:00 pcm

how would I send an mp3/wav file to it?

Sorry about the length, layout and lamentable lack of learning

Simon
