Hmm, does the driver produce a /dev/sand/dsp or /dev/dsp etc entry, if so try sending that device node a file (a .wav file is probably best) and see if you get anything directly that way. You may also have alsa installed (and if alsa and no compatability module then no /dev/snd/dsp etc) but give alsamixer a go from the command line, sometimes it can solve sound mixer problems where kmix just lets you down by not showing some extra mixer controls that may be present. Oh one more thing, do you have permission to use the sound device as your normal user, is it a simple permissions problem where root is ok?
