Not sure if it counts as a 'dummies'-kind of guide (though it doesn't
require any pre-knowledge and starts from scratch), but I've used
Kopka and Daly's "A guide to LaTeX" so much, it has started falling
apart ages ago.

Thinking about it, it does have some exercises in every chapter, which
might be quite useful if you want to learn the language.
