'not an installation candidate' or was it
'E: Package realplayer has no installation candidate'

Likely you didn't run "apt-get update" after altering the sources.list

mplayer is in Etch, so yes that would be consistent with not running the
update, as mplayer would have installed anyway.

"apt-get install mozplugger" may be ? But you should be able to
configure firefox to use the app of your choice for this type of file
easily (although less so if mozplugger isn't installed!!).
