OpenSuSE is likely to float away from Novell SuSE, I think.

Depending on what is done to reduce that, there may be benefits and
problems from it.

Common platform work and apt for SuSE look like antidotes, and easers of
passage from SuSE to Debian etc for users, corporate users and elements
in the support infrastructure.

The strength in the FLOSS community (and it is and should be one
community, much as MS would like it to be several) is in writing and
supporting code, licences are hugely important but keep turning out code
and building the support ecology - that is a more immediate though less
fundamental need.
