Yes, I am running GoogleEarth on my main Edgy system with no problems at all. 
I have installed it on my laptop too (running Dapper, but no 3d 
acceleration - a rubbish SiS chip).
Have you tried launching GoogleEarth via a command line - it may throw up a 
few clues as to the problem you are experiencing.

You can log out of the GUI to the login screen and select the option to have a 
command line login there - thats what I do for work on things like the nvidia 
drivers.
Ubuntu uses a different runlevel setting than Mandriva. In mandriva, the full 
GUI boot would be runlevel 5 if I recall correctly, but in Ubuntu releases, 
it is - I think - runlevel 2.

Once I have finished my cooking/eating tea, I will do what I can to sort the 
nvidia issue - unless someone has already done that,
