QEMU is quite good if you have a bit of power on your system and a
load of ram. QEMU is open source as well. There is also an accelerator
kernel module (although this is not open source) it *really* helps
with speed of a guest operating system.

If you do go to a VM test, hardware will not be fully supported as you
will be running a "virtual" computer with "virtual" hardware. While
the mouse and keyboard will be routed through and the display emulated
it can be difficult to get other hardware to work. RS232 is possible,
parallel ports are possible. Some USB is possible.

It is still however a good way to get to know the distro and poke
around and it dosn;t matter what you do inside the VM you will not
hurt your main system.
