Nor is Debian popcon, but they report 3x as many people with gdm as kdm,
of course they could be using gdm to start KDE, but the figures for
other desktop packages were similar. Although I'm not sure which is the
default in the installer, as that might bias the figures for a
particular distribution.

I use KDE from Sarge at work and GNOME from Sid at home, and well GNOME
today is definitely better than KDE was a year or so ago, but that isn't
a very fair comparison now is it ;)

Both are bloated beyond all reasonable expectations, and I rarely find I
explicitly use features that are specific to either (even klipper has
had his actions turned off for months (wings klipped?), and did I
notice?). Although I am getting on well with some of the GNOME
administration tools recently (although they are buggy in places), the
old KDE control center is just too big and complex, and this from a guy
whose been using "vi{m}" instead of these admin tools for much of his
working life.
