Hi Richard,
I think you have your hard drives in the 'wrong order', it would
probably make things a lot simpler if you had your booting (and
primary) hdd as your first and the second as the secondary - have you
thought of swapping the drive cables and checking (if using IDE) the
master/slave relationship between your drives (including the CD
Drive).
I haven't really played with PC hardware for a decade so I could be
barking up the wrong tree.
I'm afraid I've no idea how to help with the sound - apart from
suggesting you try to use the soundcard you've installed instead of
the onboard sound.
