I had a problem installing zenwalk, which uses the slackware setup
routines. It tries to install lilo on the boot sector on hda, my HD was
hdb. The "expert" option on the bootloader section of the menu allows
one to modify lilo.conf, but I found that the changes didn't take.

So the thing to do, and this may well work in other circumstances, is to
install slackware/zenwalk and then boot up using the installation disc
as a live disc, (ZW 2.8 does this), and then find lilo.conf, the
harddrive installation is under /etc, (to my best recollection), tweak
lilo.conf, do a chroot /etc so everything is where lilo expects it, and
then a lilo -v.

This seems to be a more reliable way of installing to the MBR than the
install on the setup app.
