Good stuff - I was hoping, for the sanity of everyone that tries it - 
and the wellbeing of their family, pets and co-workers, that in the time 
since I tried it the process had become significantly less complicated.

Back then, gimp relied on xsane which relied on sane. Each one had to be 
configured in turn. By far the worst was sane which hated the world and 
was determined to reduce everyone in it to a gibbering wreck. Further 
complicating things was that this was in the days of parrallel port 
scanners, when usb wasn't even recognised by linux (idd, only just 
launched as hardware).
