I bought a APF (Auto Photo Feeder) scanner when I did our "thousands". 
HP Scanjet 5530. The APF is just "ok" - jams often, but still way faster 
than laying out one to four at a time. MUCH more expensive than a 
standard flatbed, and if you've got a working A4 scanner, depending on 
how many "100s" you have, you might prefer doing it 4 at a time and 
cutting/cropping seperately.

No idea on the 5530's linux compatibility, I used XP for that. My 
experiences with xsane a couple of years ago wasted several weeks of 
attempts with various scanners before I gave up scanning under linux...
