I've noticed diveintomark.org do some excellent videos. Not sure how he
did it though.

Currently I am backing up some family DVDs to VOB and copying to a new
external USB hard drive. I would like to compress and re-encode them
using OGG theora, but my machine X40 doesn't have the resources to do
so.  Backing up in this digital age is such a pain!

Any ideas how to scan in 100s of old photographs painlessly?

I recommend a negative scanner, if you have one or can afford one. Perhaps you can find one with auto-feed to automate it, but if not you can probably do 5 at a time...
