ok, try this;

cp /usr/share/mysql/mysql.server /etc/init.d/
/etc/init.d/mysql.server start

(nb: no & on command)

ps ax | grep mysql

***************

Does it run ?

Can you then connect ?

what do you get out of;

***************

netstat -alnp | grep mysql

***************
