Re: [LUG] Setting up broadband

I have finally decided to go for it. Next Wednesday 24th is activation
day. I am planning to set up a wireless router (using Mandriva2006). I
will connect up normally with my computer upstairs (ie I will connect
my Linux computer to the router using a cable). My wife's
laptop (running Windows!!) is to be set up to use the wireless
connection so that she can use it anywhere in the house.

Are there any traps to look out for. Do I configure my computer as a
lan connection? Any help gladly received.

Hi

just to stick my 2p's worth in for a setup like yours I'd recommend using dLan/homeplug tech for your network. This uses your electric circuit as the ethernet network. You run a ethernet cable from the router to the dLan plug which goes into an ordinary plug socket. Then where ever you have your PC you run a cable from dLan plug to PC. For the laptop you stick a dLan wifi point in any convenient socket and the laptop picks up the network from that.

Have a look at www.solwise.co.uk. A nice company with some interesting documentation. Unless you're transferring massive files around your lan the cheapest option is fine, ie you're just web browsing.

You do need to register each plug on the network. This is slightly easier to do on the windows PC as the software provided is for windows. However Devolo, a company whose dLan plugs are slightly more expensive (a nice translucent blue colour though), have linux software for doing this which works fine with dLan plugs from all manufacturers.

No wires, (well no new ones), and very portable. Sorry about band standing a piece of tech I think is unjustly overlooked.
