Welcome back ?

Though with Demon and with most ISPs, the free modem seems to be USB.
I'm not going there. Is it wiser to buy your own modem/router to have
DHCP piece of mind? Or does an ISP give a decent modem away...

Buy one. Make sure it does ADSL2 (ADSL 2+ is a branding thing I think?!), to save buying another later.

After checking the number, it seems 1mb down and 256up is the best one
can get. Disappointing. Or is this incorrect?
Is Demon alright still? :)

I left. The technical service on ISDN was fine, but the cost too high, and the support mixed. Just search for "billing problems" and Demon. Got the feeling they didn't want my business.

Else can anyone recommend something that isn't the draconian
pay-as-you-go.

Jason Clifford is running UKFSN, they resell Entanet ADSL, which are one of the bigger providers, so far the main downside is they send me huge PDFs as invoices (which was especially bad for the one that arrived before broadband). The main advantage is that as a small reseller Jason will handle support, and the profits go somewhere useful. Not had any issues since it was set up, I think ADSL is just that much easier to supply.

Eclipse are also quite good, their "flex" products being a USP.

2Mbps down is available most places, the full 8Mbps is starting in the spring, BBC news site had a story on it yesterday. Some LLU companies already doing 8Mbps, and promising 24Mbps in future.
