Smoothwall already runs a cacheing DNS proxy server.. do you have your smoothwall's IP as a nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf ?? Smoothwall can run a web proxy server (squid) if you want it to, AFAIK it is disabled by default. if you would like to use the squid on the smoothwall, although i wouldn't on a 2Mb link, port 800 is whats required, plus the IP address of hostname of your smoothwall..
