Works for me - I keep all my email on the IMAP server on my desktop,
pick up other stuff via IMAP4 from whatever OS/mail client is to hand.

Works best though if you filter server side, and even the "easy" text
configs for that are painful if you ask me ( sieve / maildrop /
procmail(yuk)). There may be interfaces for setting up simple server
side mail filtering rules depending what you are trying to achieve, and
what software you choose.
