the installation program will tell if you are installing the 32bit/64bit version, stick the dvd in and reboot the machine. Make sure you ahve a backup of windows before you start, as on first installation, sometimes you might lose windows. On Tue, 2005-04-19 at 13:39, Martin White wrote:
Sorry for still being a bit dumb on this :o) My copy of SUSE 9.3 has turned up this morning and i intend to install it this evening. I'm still a little confused about the 64 bit environment though. I can see that there are a ton of 64 bit RPMs on the installtion DVD, along with 32 bit rpms, but there is no mention that i can see anywhere of whether i need to do anything special to tell it i wish to install the 64 bit versions as standard, dropping back to 32 bit only where 64 is not available for an application. Does it just KNOW that it should do this or is there a boot option or something? Again, apologies if i'm being a bit dumb. I can't help but think this would be a nightmare for people who are true users without any technical know how at all. What about all the people who have bought AMD64 based machines and are merrily running Windows XP. Do you think they realise that they're running entirely 32 bit? Unless of course they have access to MSDN which, i beleive has RC2 of XP64 - that may be innacurate since i've not bothered looking. I am indeed running 32bit XP on my other partition. I use it so rarely that i really don't care! Martin. -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG Mail majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe list" in the message body to unsubscribe.
