He could market these machines as "baseline desktops" and advise potential users that they will not be able to install any shop-bought software. Hardware issues are less of a worry - people looking at machines like this aren't likely to just pop to the shops to by a winmodem - especially if he includes essential hardware like this that *will* work under Linux! He could, at the point of sale, "instruct" the potential buyer that if s/he requires any additional software to that which is already present and installed, then they should come to him for advice.
