RE: [LUG] Who's best for Broadband in Plymouth?

Hi All,

Since BT introduced Capacity pricing a price/turf war has started in the UK. Pipex
bought Nildram to get their 35,000 subs and I believe Eclipse was bought by Kingston
to get theirs. I read that after the 6th Sept announcement about dropping the length
restriction BT were taking 5,000 orders per day (could have been per week).

So my advise would be to get a router as Neil suggests and unless you have
specialist requirements (Qos, Managed VPN's or Routed Network) shop around and keep
the contract short.

That all being said the cheapest I've seen is www.adsl4less.com - Home 500
unrestricted for £14.99 per month inc VAT. I did some digging and I believe it's run
by an Australian Telco wanting market share.

Regards

Mick

Much difference between cable and ADSL?

How does Telewest compare? Are they ADSL or something else?

Has to be self install, I have to connect a modem/router so that the
broadband can be shared. USB no good since I can't leave a PC on.

I have just signed up with Metronet. I'm not connected yet as we don't
get ADSL enabled 'till January.
First impressions are that they are Linux friendly. It is a wires only
package, they recommend a proper router and even provide some hints
and tips on models they have encountered.
The PayGo tariff is a bit odd. They start you at a really low rate
then charge by the MiB until you reach the max monthly charge (< £30
for 1MB connection). The actual transfers are not capped.

I have been with Metronet for about a year and can vouch for
their Linux friendliness. eg The guy I spoke to had not only heard
of KDE but seemed to know the in-and-outs ot the cat's a**e
about most versions of Kmail.

They also keep you informed of upgrades to their servers. During my
year with them I have had about 2-3 non-connects each of which was
during the installation of new ADSL pipes involving BT. (I get the
impression they are not overly enthused with BT.)

As I'm not a heavy user their pricing system suits me.
At switch over I was paying less for ADSL than I did for dial-up.
