[LUG] Migrating to Linux

Hey folks,

I'm in the process of migrating to Linux, well I have been for the past 6 years, just never really stuck with it, but well I decided it might be worth taking the plunge again.

In the past I've used RedHat, Suse, Mandrake and Fedora Linux on my various PCs, but for some reason or other I've never stuck with it, usually because I was either too lazy or impatient to work things out.

Anyway, I think I've worked out what my main PC usuage is, and I've started running open source alternatives, Firefox, Thunderbird, Gaim etc on Windows XP, but I'd like to go a step further and dual boot Linux (again!).

My PC is an Athlon 64 3000+, I have tried the 64-Bit version of Fedora Core 2, but I didn't get on with it very well, so I'm thinking for now maybe I'd be better of staying in 32-bit land (I am running 32-bit XP Pro so it wouldn't matter for a bit longer not running 64-bit anyway I don't think).

Now the main programs I do use on my PC that I can't seem to find alternatives for seem to be DVD Shrink and my Sony NET MD drivers & software.

Could anyone suggest any alternatives to these two applications? I think other than that I would be okay with everything, as long as I can read my mail, browse t'internet and chat on Yahoo & MSN.

Rob
