| 2 I apt-got the wireless driver linux-wlan-ng and installed it.

I'd have used the Prism2 drivers in the default kernel. Although
eventually everything will use the wlan-ng framework I believe, the
various wireless projects are merging in Linux. It is far easier
just to slap in the wireless tools, and load up the included drivers
than install the wlan-ng if all you have is generic Prism2 802.11b.
For some more complex wireless configurations the wlan-ng stuff is
desirable.

| 7 Alt 7, back to kde. The keyboard is now quite dead and the
ethernet led
| on the router is not flickering. CTRL-ALT-F1 no go.
| 8 Go off to write this down while I remember it.
| 9 I unplug and replug the router, fire up Windows and everything
works.
| 10 I log out of Windows, unplug ethernet, plug in the wireless adapter
| and boot up. The keyboard is dead. The adapter is fine of course
| because I can log in on a VT and work normally. I just can't get to
| kde.
|
| My conclusion is that debian is seriously flaky.

Hmm, I would suspect some sort of hardware compatibility issue, I've
seen interrupts conflicts between keyboards and other devices cause
a similar issue with a mouse. Also beaware of cold and warm reboots
doing different things, running Windows is a good way to alter the
nehaviour if you only do a warm reboot. Always switch off for 5
seconds when rebooting for troubleshooting purposes.

| 11 In /etc/network/interfaces there is a line 'auto eth0 on'. I
comment
| that out and try again. No change.
|
| Can you tell me please how I stop the boot sequence trying to
bring eth0
| up? Short of clawing the card out. That might just be the solution.

Remove "auto" as per "man interfaces" should work.

Removing the card, and seeing if this resolves the keyboard issue
would at least point at a conflict of some sort.
