Hi Alan, The router (damn.. reboot it) allowed me in the second time after rebooting. The DHCP Client Table (damn.. reboot it AGAIN) says: geri (the LAPTOP on Windows) 192.168.1.2 Nothing for this machine. Previously I have seen (for example): natalie 192.168.1.2 192.168.1.3 geri 192.168.1.4 Considering I only have the two machines THAT's what set the alarm bells ringing. I have now tried: Both machines in Windows on Static IPs: Works Both machines in Windows on DHCP: Works Both machines in Linux on DHCP: Doesn't work Both machines in Linux on Static IP: Doesn't work I did work out how to stop the DHCP server for the router... the pamphlet (I won't dignify it by calling it a manual) for the router was a bit sketchy on anything other than initial set-up. What happens is that I am able to perform *one* network action on the desktop in Linux (ie s/r mail or go to one website). However if for example I try to go to another website, or get mail again, the second action *always* fails unless I reboot the router. It's as if it has two IP addresses and it alternates between the two. Of course the second one doesn't work. So I am in the intolerable situation of having to reboot the router every time I want to do anything on the network. To be honest I am making no headway at all with this, despite the kind help of you and others in the group. I'm quite tempted to simply reinstall MDK10 from scratch. It's all very well me saying this is a learning process, but when there is no progress it is highly frustrating. Kind regards, Julian PS I had to reboot the router to send this. -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG Mail majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe list" in the message body to unsubscribe.
