The guy who contacted me is Florian Zeiler.  Incidentally Epson Support
simply replied telling me they don't support Linux and to check online.
Black mark to them on that score since linuxprinting.org says the exact
opposite, ie that they are very helpful.  Somebody needs to tell them that.
