Please do discuss DCLUG with the tutor, if they aren't also lurking quietly.

There are only so many things to try here.

Redhat CD have bootable floppy images on you can rawrite (or dd) to
floppy disk to get started. You then boot from floppy and the floppy has
a suitable CD ROM driver compiled into its kernel.

I know I was dead impressed when working with a really ancient PC with a
realy bizarre Creative CD player, only to find documentation and a
suitable floppy image within a few seconds.

That said if a computer built since 1998 won't boot from CD when the
BIOS settings are right, it probably has hardware problems. Is the BIOS
update actually taking? i.e. set boot from CDROM in BIOS, save, switch
off, wait 5 seconds, switch on, check BIOS settings to see it is still
boot from CDROM.

How far does it get?

Probably, and a later Redhat woud probably help, I mean 6 was good, but
it is ancient history.
