Sorry it worked before the firewall, or your surfing using a
proxy - tad unclear what worked, and what broke.

Don't just set routing in Linux conf - check it with "netstat
-r" or "netstat -rn" (if the DNS is bust - or suspect).

No - this is typically an either/or decision. Certainly for any
protocol you can masquerade or proxy. 

For example you want to send SMTP from any host, the Mail
Transport agent on the gateway could easily be configured to
accept e-mail and either send it, or forward it to a smart host.

Alternatively if your masquerading, outgoing SMTP connections
should just work.
